Capital preservation is the cornerstone of all professional technical analysis. During quarterly earnings announcements, price volatility expands non-linearly. Standard position sizing metrics that work during normal consolidation periods can lead to catastrophic drawdowns if not calibrated for earnings volatility.
The Fallacy of the Fixed Percentage Stop
Many amateur traders apply arbitrary rules such as 'I always place a 2% stop-loss.' During an earnings gap of 8% or 12%, a 2% stop will suffer severe slippage and fail to align with real chart support levels.
Instead, professional chartists employ Volatility-Calibrated Position Sizing:
- Calculate the Average True Range (ATR): Review the stock's 14-day ATR and compare it with the historical earnings gap average over the prior 4 quarters.
- Determine Technical Invalidation Level: Find the exact technical level where the post-earnings thesis is invalidated (such as the low of the 15-minute opening candle or the previous major swing low).
- Derive Share Size from Maximum Dollar Risk: If your maximum allowable risk per trade is 1% of total portfolio equity, divide that dollar amount by the distance between your planned entry and the technical invalidation point.
Post-Release Execution Rules
Never add to a losing post-earnings position hoping for a turnaround. When a stock breaks key support following earnings, institutional repricing is underway. Respect your technical invalidation level immediately and preserve capital for high-conviction setups.
